The 2000s ushered in a new stadium dropped into the shell of Roman colonnades of Soldier Field. The classic architecture is dwarfed by a futuristic façade. For one season in 2001, the Bears seemed to do no wrong as the improbable division champions finished 13-3 under the quietly conservative Dick Jauron. The 2001 season proved to be a mirage as the Bears fell hard back to reality. Ted Phillips working to bolster the football operation hired a search firm to find the Bears a bona fide talent evaluator to serve as General Manger. Instead, the Bears hired long time scout Jerry "War Room" Angelo. Angelo was hired after the 2001 draft and on the condition he would retain current coach Dick Jauron, who he extended after the 2001 season then fired after the 2003 season.
Angelo's choice to replace Jauron was St. Louis Rams Defensive Coordinator Lovie Smith. Since the improbable 2001 season, the Bears have yet to make the playoffs or have a winning record.
Playoff Appearances/Championships
| Year | Record | Summary |
|---|---|---|
| 2001 | 13-3-0 | A year that earned Dick Jauron Coach of the Year honors proved to be a mirage. The Bears amassed their record and division crown in improbable fashsion with several come from behind victories. Despite the first round bye and home field against the Philadelphia Eagles, Jauron's Bears were easily dispatched 19-33 by Chicago native and Eagle's QB Donovan McNabb. |
| 2005 | 11-5 | Lovie Smith build a strong defense that carried the Bears most of the 2005 season. Despite the need to start rookie QB Kyle Orton, the Bears at one point put together an 8 game winning streak to take control of the division. In week 15 the Bears clinched the NFC North division in Green Bay. The victory not only won the Bears the division, but it marked the first time (since 1991) the Bears swept the season series from the Packers. The Bears faced the Carolina Panthers in the divisional round. The defense that carried the team didn't show up and set season highs for points and yardage allowed. The Panthers won the game 29-21. Another post-season one and done for an organization struggling to be taken seriously in the NFL. |
