The 1930s was a decade of winning records, two division titles, two championships, and the introduction of NFL Playoffs (1933). This decade also saw the beginning of a pattern of coaching changes that continued for the next 30 plus seasons. Ralph Jones was hired in 1930 who promised a championship within 3 years. Jones resurrected the long-forgotten 'T' formation, which was common on the college campuses in the 1880s, and installed a modified version of it in Chicago.
It was a great innovation in professional football because it was the first offense that featured motion and the forward pass. The offense proved successful because it allowed Ralph Jones to deliver on his promise with a championship in 1932. This championships was the last one awarded by the NFL based on final standings.
George Halas resumed coaching for the second time in 1933 and successfully defended the championship. However, the 1933 title was significant because it was the first one decided in the post-season. The Chicago Bears and the New York Giants squared-off in a tight game with the Bears winning 23 to 21. Halas would return to the championship game in 1934 but this rime losing to the Giants in the famous “Sneakers Game.” The next post season win for Halas would spark a championship run in Chicago of epic proportions.
Playoff Appearances/Championships
A playoff system did not exist until the 1933 season. The Chicago Bears won the last record based championship in 1933. They attempted to defend the title in 1934 by posting an undefeated record, but only to lose the New York Giants 13-30
