Information on Jim Dooley is hard to come by. If you have any sources or insight, please let me know.
Former Bear player Jim Dooley became the Chicago Bears 6th head coach in 1968. I assume after his playing career in Chicago concluded, Mr. Dooley was an assistant coach from 1962-1967 with the Bears. He obviously did something in those years before re-surfacing as a Head Coach for four seasons. I'm guessing he was promoted to the head coaching position.
Dooley was the third choice in Halas' search to replace himself. George Allen was number one, but due to a huge misjudgement my Halas, Allen was fired and took the L.A Rams job and ended up in the Hall of Fame as a coach.
The second choice was former Bears QB and 1963 Champion Billy Wade. But Wade pulled out after he learned that Halas, after telling Wade the job was his, was waffling between him and Dooley. No doubt Halas was looking for the same negotiating leverage that he errantly fired Allen for.
In many ways, the Dooley hiring foreshadowed the Jauron hire nearly 30 years later by Michael McCaskey.
